The Power of a Drop: Essential Oils as Tools for Emotional Healing

Project Ownership had the opportunity to speak with serial entrepreneur Shana Towns. She is the CEO of ShanaCanCoach, Luv Bugs Family Child Care, & Luv Bugs Doula CareShana.

Our conversation focused on her business, ShanaCanCoach, where she serves as a certified life & emotion coach who supports women on their healing and wellness journey, utilizing Pure Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils as tools to help them express and manage their emotions. For Shana, essential oils are more than just a product — they’re a bridge to peace, balance, and rediscovery. Her work is grounded in faith, compassion, and a passion for helping others lead more joyful lives.

For some, the thought of essential oils and healing can sound mysterious or even “woo-woo.” But as Shana reminds us, essential oils are plants — created by God with natural healing properties. There’s no magic, just nature’s medicine.

Essential oils serve as a bridge to healing, connecting the mind and body. Here’s an interesting fact… The olfactory bulb in our brain processes smells and sends signals to the limbic system, which controls our emotions, memory, and motivation. This makes smell one of the quickest ways to influence our emotional state, which is why combining essential oils with life coaching is so powerful.

What inspired Shana to become an owner, and how did she get started?

Shana’s entrepreneurial journey began in her most sacred role — motherhood. Over 24 years ago, as a new mom, she desired a business that would allow her the flexibility to be at home while raising her children. That desire led her to open a home daycare, which quickly took off. She was amazed by the need in her community and the positive impact she was making.

This experience sparked something in her — a passion for nurturing others — which eventually led her to become a labor and childbirth doula. To date, she has assisted over 40 families during the pregnancy and the birthing process, supporting families through some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.

About ten years ago, Shana was introduced to dōTERRA Essential Oils, and she became curious about their natural wellness benefits. She began using them for her own family’s ailments — for digestive health, immune support, and even as a way to help her kids calm down. It was a game-changer. Not only did it bring peace to her home, but she also began teaching other parents how to use oils to help their children manage their emotions.

Then, a little over a year ago, while attending an annual dōTERRA convention, Shana learned about a program called Essential Emotions, which combines essential oils and wellness with life coaching. She immediately felt a spark. It was the perfect way to combine her love for helping people with natural wellness and emotional healing. That experience was the catalyst for ShanaCanCoach — a business that is celebrated by her family, friends, and community ever since.

What impact has ownership had on Shana's life, family, and community?

At the heart of all of Shana’s ventures is her love for people and her passion for caretaking. Being a business owner has taught her valuable lessons about having good contracts,

creating balance, and maintaining healthy boundaries. It’s also deepened her love for learning new ways to grow and serve others.

Business ownership has brought freedom — the freedom to enjoy more quality time with her family and the flexibility to live life on her terms. Shana is especially proud of the ripple effect her journey has had on those around her — her husband, her three sons, her mom, her sister, and her cousins. Her family is proud of her, and that brings her joy, keeping her motivated and inspired.

Shana is also deeply connected to her community in Southern California, in an area known as the Coachella Valley. She regularly attends community events, shares information about wellness, and finds great joy in seeing her community thrive. Seeing her community thrive and receiving feedback on the positive difference that she is making also brings her happiness.

What fears or challenges did Shana have before becoming an owner, and how did she overcome them?

Being a business owner can bring up a lot of emotions and questions. Am I good enough? Will people support me? What if I fail? Shana has faced those same fears — but she didn’t let them stop her.

When doubt creeps in, she coaches herself. She replaces negative thoughts with positive ones and reminds herself of all the lives she’s touched. She focuses on evidence — the transformations she’s helped others experience — and that fuels her confidence to keep moving forward.

Shana also reads books to enhance her abilities and uses essential oils to help her stay balanced and grounded. And she believes strongly in surrounding herself with a supportive team — people who celebrate her, encourage her, and give honest feedback to help her grow.

What advice would Shana give someone who’s never owned an income-producing asset but wants to start?

Shana’s advice is heartfelt:

  • Find your tribe. Surround yourself with people who will support you, cheer you on, and hold you accountable.

  • Stay passionate. Believe in yourself and go for it! If it doesn’t work out, that’s okay — take the lessons, adjust, and move forward wiser.

  • Have fun and enjoy the journey. Stressing yourself out makes the process heavy, but having fun keeps things light.

  • Stay focused. Don’t dabble. Stick with it, stay committed, and make the necessary sacrifices. They’ll be worth it in the end.
